Dick Durbin, No. 2 Democrat in Senate, Won’t Seek Re-Election

Senator Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, announced he will retire in 2026 after nearly three decades in office. The 80-year-old has served since 1996 and held the powerful role of Senate Democratic Whip since 2005.

His retirement opens a leadership vacancy and sparks a competitive Democratic primary in Illinois, with names like Reps. Krishnamoorthi, Kelly, and Underwood mentioned as potential successors.

Durbin is the fourth Senate Democrat to step down ahead of the 2026 midterms, joining Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Gary Peters, and Tina Smith. Their exits raise concerns for Democrats seeking to keep control of the Senate.

Republicans aim to flip seats in swing states like New Hampshire, Michigan, and Georgia. Senate GOP leaders see growing opportunities to increase their majority in the next election cycle.
