Panel Warns Of ‘Deep Flaws’ in Secret Service, Demands ‘Fundamental Reform’

An independent panel reviewing the July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, found “deep flaws” in the Secret Service and called for its “fundamental reform.

” The panel uncovered “numerous mistakes” and deeper systemic problems, including poor critical thinking, cultural issues, unclear site security roles, and leadership failures.

It criticized the agency’s planning and agent selection, warning that another incident could occur without major changes. The panel dedicated its findings to those harmed in the attack.

In response, Trump nominated Sean Curran, a key agent during the attack, as the new Secret Service director, praising his leadership and bravery.

Separately, the GAO urged policymakers to address generative AI’s societal and environmental risks, calling for frameworks to manage its development responsibly and reduce energy and water use.
