Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy met face-to-face for the first time since their tense White House exchange earlier this year, ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral in Vatican City.
Their brief meeting, reportedly lasting around 15 minutes, took place inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Zelenskyy later posted on Twitter, calling it a “very symbolic” discussion focused on peace, emphasizing the need for a full and unconditional ceasefire.
Trump echoed similar sentiments on Truth Social, claiming Russia and Ukraine are “very close” to a deal and urging both sides to act quickly.
While tensions between the two leaders have been high in the past, both appear to have taken a diplomatic step forward. More talks are expected while they remain in Rome, with both sides optimistic about future progress.
