The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Karen Read’s appeal in a case where she’s accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, in 2022.
Read claimed the jury had unanimously acquitted her on some charges during her first trial, arguing a retrial would violate double jeopardy.
The trial ended in a mistrial, but some jurors later told defense attorneys they had cleared her of second-degree murder and leaving the scene, only deadlocking on manslaughter while under the influence. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson denied her request to stay the retrial, which is now underway.
Separately, the Supreme Court also declined to block Illinois’ assault weapons ban, passed after a mass shooting. Gun rights advocates argue it violates the Second Amendment and plan to petition again.
