Wisconsin Judge Protests Colleague’s Arrest, Refuses to Hold Court
Circuit Judge Monica Isham announced she will stop hearing cases in protest of fellow Judge Hannah Dugan’s arrest, following accusations that Dugan helped an undocumented immigrant evade ICE agents. Isham, in an internal email, claimed Dugan was arrested for upholding her constitutional oath and criticized what she called an unjust system.
Dugan faces federal charges of obstruction and concealing a person from arrest after allegedly sneaking a deported Mexican national, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, out of court through a restricted exit to avoid ICE detention. Isham said she refuses to put herself or her staff “in harm’s way” under similar circumstances.
The incident has stirred political backlash, with Attorney General Pam Bondi condemning Dugan and also highlighting a separate case involving former New Mexico Judge Joel Cano, who was arrested for aiding a gang-linked illegal immigrant and destroying evidence.
