Vice President-elect JD Vance met with Speaker Mike Johnson and GOP lawmakers Thursday night as a government shutdown loomed.

Earlier that day, the House rejected President-elect Trump’s funding bill in a 174–235 vote, with 38 Republicans voting against it. The bill would have suspended the debt ceiling and extended government funding until March 14. Controversial additions and pressure from GOP hardliners like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy contributed to the chaos. A shutdown remains possible as Friday’s deadline approaches.
