Federal Bill Proposes Citizenship Proof Requirement for Voter Registration

The House has narrowly passed the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, 220–208, which would require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to advance. If enacted, it would set nationwide rules for verifying citizenship, mandate removal of noncitizens from voter rolls, and enforce compliance—replacing current state-by-state standards. Supporters say it aims to protect election integrity.
