GOP Senator Says He Will Not Vote For Trump Pick To Be US Attorney In DC

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced he will not support President Trump’s nominee, Ed Martin, for U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., primarily due to Martin’s stance on the January 6 Capitol attack.

Tillis cited lingering concerns despite meeting with Martin and emphasized that anyone who entered the Capitol that day should face consequences. He acknowledged Martin’s point that some individuals may have been overcharged but insisted Martin’s views made him unfit for the D.C. role. With Tillis’ opposition, and unanimous Democratic resistance expected, Martin’s confirmation is likely dead. Trump called Martin’s confirmation “imperative,” but legal and procedural hurdles remain if the Senate fails to confirm a nominee by May 20.
