Chief Justice John Roberts, 70, says he has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court, joking he’ll leave “feet first.”
Speaking at an event in Buffalo, Roberts said he’s asked two friends to tell him when it’s time to step down due to health—but when he asked, they humorously said, “It’s time to go.”
Roberts, who still feels healthy, said age hasn’t been a major issue on the Court and emphasized the importance of stepping aside only when one becomes a burden. He also reiterated his view that judicial impeachment shouldn’t be used to express disagreement with court decisions.
Meanwhile, Justices Samuel Alito, 74, and Sonia Sotomayor, 70, have also signaled they aren’t retiring, despite public speculation and calls from activists.
