Just one day after the conclave began in Rome, the College of Cardinals has elected a new pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost.

In a surprise move, Prevost—an American born in Chicago and known for his moderate views—was chosen over several expected candidates. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

His appointment follows the death of Pope Francis on Easter Sunday, April 21, at age 88.
