The U.S. Senate narrowly blocked a move to repeal President Donald Trump’s tariffs in a 49-49 vote, thanks to the absence of two key senators.
Three Republican senators—Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins—broke ranks to side with Democrats, citing economic concerns and support for restoring congressional control over tariff policy. Their votes drew criticism from Trump allies but reflected longstanding positions, especially from Paul, a known opponent of tariffs.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the tariffs, saying they are pressuring countries like China, which faces a 145% tariff. Despite the drama, Trump has remained silent, while his team promotes the tariffs as essential to global trade negotiations.
Meanwhile, the administration is pushing for a new tax bill aimed at stimulating economic growth.
