During CBS Mornings’ coverage of the papal conclave on 7 May, co-anchor Tony Dokoupil stunned viewers by joking that cardinals were “raw-dogging” the process—referring to their complete disconnection from electronic devices.
The phrase, now popular on social media to describe doing activities without distractions, has explicit origins, originally meaning unprotected sex.
Viewers were quick to react, with many criticizing its use in the sacred context of electing a pope. The comment came during an explanation of the conclave’s rules, including the cardinals’ isolation and focus on prayer.
With all devices confiscated and limited contact with the outside world, the College of Cardinals reside in Casa Santa Marta until a decision is made. While the comment was meant humorously, many online felt it was inappropriate for the solemn occasion.
