The End of Federal Telework: A Bold Policy Move by the Trump Administration

Trump Administration Ends Federal Telework Era, Sparking Back-to-Office Mandate

The Trump administration has effectively ended federal telework, with only 8.9% of federal employees working remotely part-time—down from 19.8% in 2024. The shift is part of Trump’s America First agenda, aimed at boosting accountability and in-office productivity.

A February 6, 2025 mandate required all federal employees to return to the office or face termination. Elon Musk, heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), enforced the policy with strict tracking and performance requirements, calling remote work a “Covid-era privilege.”

The transition has caused office space shortages, employee resignations, and legal challenges from unions. Critics warn of a “brain drain” and difficulty competing with the private sector, where hybrid models remain common.

Supporters argue the move improves oversight and collaboration, but experts question its long-term impact on recruitment and government efficiency.
