As former President Donald Trump ramps up deportations, many undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are choosing to self-deport, especially in cities like Denver,
which has received a high number of migrants. The New York Times reports a shift in sentiment compared to the Biden era, when more asylum applications were accepted. Some migrants now fear deportation and prefer to leave on their own.
Venezuelan asylum-seekers like Christian and Jesús, who came recently and obtained work permits, say Trump’s return has changed their plans. Christian says he now wants to leave before being deported. Jesús, detained briefly after arriving in 2024, also prefers to leave voluntarily.
Other migrants, like Venezuelan couple Karla and Ender, say they plan to stay temporarily to achieve financial goals. Meanwhile, Diego de la Vega, a DACA recipient and former staffer for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has left the U.S. after living there for 23 years, citing a desire for stability and legal status abroad.
His departure raises questions about DACA recipients’ roles in government jobs, though Ocasio-Cortez praised his work and commitment.
