Trump Launches Voluntary Self-Deportation Program
President Donald Trump announced a new executive order offering a “free flight” for undocumented immigrants who choose to self-deport. Shared on his Truth Social account, the program promises removal “in a place and manner solely of our discretion” for those who stay.
“We’re making it as easy as possible for illegal aliens to leave,” Trump said, noting that migrants can show up at an airport for a free ticket. He also added an “exit bonus” to encourage participation, claiming it will save taxpayers billions.
Days earlier, the Department of Homeland Security introduced a similar program via the CBP Home App, offering $1,000 to those who voluntarily return to their home country. DHS said self-deportation cuts costs by 70%, compared to the current $17,121 per removal.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem called it a “safe and cost-effective” option, noting participants may be deprioritized for ICE enforcement and could preserve future legal entry options.
However, the American Immigration Lawyers Association warned migrants to seek legal advice, citing possible long-term consequences like future re-entry bans.
