Newark Mayor Arrested After ICE Facility Standoff; DOJ Pushes Back on Democrats’ Claims
Interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba confirmed Friday that Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested for trespassing after refusing multiple orders to leave a federal ICE facility.
Habba pushed back on accusations from three Democratic House members—Reps. Bonnie Watson-Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Rob Menendez—who claimed federal agents mistreated them during their protest at the Newark detention center.
Bodycam footage released by ICE shows Rep. McIver pushing past an agent and yelling at DHS officers. Habba defended the arrest as lawful and criticized the lawmakers for “grandstanding.” DHS officials are considering criminal charges against some members involved.
