President Donald Trump signed an executive order to reduce prescription drug prices in the U.S. by 30% to 80%.
The order implements a “most favored nation” policy, which aims to align U.S. drug prices with those of the lowest-paying countries. Trump criticized the U.S.’s significantly higher drug costs compared to other nations, calling it unfair.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the U.S. represents less than 5% of the world’s population but accounts for 57% of pharmaceutical profits.
The executive order revisits a policy Trump previously attempted but faced legal challenges. Experts warn the policy could impact access to drugs, and the pharmaceutical industry is expected to oppose it.
