Pope Leo XIV Appears to Subtly Rebuke Trump’s Claims
In his first press conference, Pope Leo XIV made comments that many see as a subtle response to Donald Trump’s claim that he influenced the pope’s election by “winning the Catholic vote.”
Trump, in a Truth Social post on May 12, bizarrely credited himself for Pope Leo’s historic appointment as the first American pope. He mocked ABC journalist Martha Raddatz for denying any Trump connection, saying it was on her “Trump Deranged Mind.”
Later that day, Pope Leo praised journalists and called for respectful, non-aggressive communication—statements seen by many as a contrast to Trump’s combative online style. “We must say ‘no’ to the war of words… free [communication] from aggression,” the pope said.
He also honored war reporters and emphasized the need for truthful information so people can make free choices.
When asked if he had a message for the U.S., the pope simply said, “Many. God bless you all.”
