Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers faced backlash after issuing guidance instructing state employees not to cooperate with ICE agents without legal counsel, even when presented with a warrant.
White House border czar Tom Homan accused Evers of obstructing federal immigration enforcement and suggested potential felony charges.
In response, Evers claimed the memo aimed to ensure legal compliance and accused the Trump administration and its allies of spreading misinformation. The memo advised staff to deny ICE access to documents and systems without attorney oversight, even in non-public areas.
The controversy escalated after Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested for allegedly sheltering an undocumented immigrant. Critics argue Evers’ guidance undermines federal law.
Evers, however, maintains he did nothing illegal and vowed not to be intimidated by political threats or legal pressure.
