President Donald Trump’s new legislative proposal may be in trouble in the GOP-controlled Senate, and it faces an even tougher path in the House.
Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Rand Paul (R-KY) have already voiced opposition—Johnson over deficit concerns and Paul over the debt ceiling. If two moderates like Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski join them, the bill could fail.
With only 53 Republican senators, GOP leaders can’t afford more than three defections under budget reconciliation rules.
Disagreements also center on Medicaid funding, with Sen. Josh Hawley warning against cuts. Meanwhile, Rep. Chip Roy insists on deep spending reductions and repealing the Inflation Reduction Act.
The internal GOP divide could block the bill before it even reaches Trump’s desk.
