Rep. Shri Thanedar Drops Impeachment Vote Plan Amid Democratic Pushback
Michigan Democrat Rep. Shri Thanedar backed off his plan to force a House vote on impeaching former President Donald Trump after facing pressure from fellow Democrats, according to Politico.
“After talking with many colleagues, I have decided not to force a vote on impeachment today,” Thanedar said, adding he’ll revise the articles and seek broader support.
Democrats were frustrated, wanting focus to stay on Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts in Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill.” Lawmakers including Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Raskin reportedly urged him to stand down.
Meanwhile, Trump’s tax-cut bill faces hurdles in the Senate despite a Republican majority. Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul have raised fiscal concerns, and others like Josh Hawley oppose Medicaid cuts. With internal GOP disagreements and slim margins, the bill’s future remains uncertain.
