Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey has been charged with assaulting ICE agents during a protest at a Newark detention center. The Democrat, accused of shoving and grabbing agents, faces up to eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
McIver called the charges politically motivated and claims she was performing her oversight duties. A judge ordered her to surrender firearms and restricted her travel.
Video evidence reportedly shows her assaulting agents. The incident involved Mayor Ras Baraka, whose trespassing charge was later dropped.
McIver’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 11, and the case remains ongoing.
