House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced an investigation into former President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen to sign controversial last-minute pardons.
The probe focuses on whether Biden was mentally capable of authorizing the autopen use or if aides acted independently.
While autopens have been used by presidents before, their application for pardons remains legally untested. Concerns have been raised about Biden’s cognitive health and the constitutional validity of blanket pardons, especially for family members like Hunter Biden.
Comer also mentioned discussions about amending the Constitution to prohibit self- or family pardons. Critics, including Donald Trump, argue some pardons signed via autopen may be invalid.
