It’s tough being a Democratic governor in a deep-red state, and it just got tougher for Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
Despite winning two terms—defeating Matt Bevin in 2019 and Daniel Cameron in 2023—he faces growing Republican strength. Donald Trump won Kentucky by over 64% in 2024.
Recently, Democratic State Sen. Robin Webb switched parties, citing the national party’s leftward shift and its disconnect with rural, coal-country voters. Her defection marks a blow to Beshear’s party and was praised by GOP leaders.
Beshear, seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, launched a podcast promoting unity and moderation, saying he’s open to a future White House run to help heal the country.
