Rep. Maxine Waters’ campaign has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after a Federal Election Commission (FEC) investigation uncovered multiple campaign finance violations.
The FEC found that her 2020 committee, Citizens for Waters, failed to accurately report receipts and disbursements, accepted $19,000 in excessive donations, and made $7,000 in prohibited cash disbursements. While the committee refunded the excess contributions, the FEC noted the action was untimely.
As part of the agreement, the campaign must send its treasurer to FEC training. Waters’ attorney called the violations unintentional errors.
Waters, a Democrat from California, has served in Congress since 1991 and chairs the House Financial Services Committee.
