The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Wisconsin-based Catholic charity, saying the state violated the First Amendment by denying tax exemptions based on religious conduct.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that Wisconsin imposed a “denominational preference” without proper legal justification.
The court reversed a prior Wisconsin ruling that said the charity wasn’t religious enough because it served non-Catholics.
In another major decision, the Court allowed the Trump administration to end parole protections for over 500,000 migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua.
The ruling overrode a lower court’s block and may lead to expedited deportations while legal battles continue.
