Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has once again split from his party, publicly condemning violent riots in Los Angeles sparked by immigration enforcement actions. On Monday, Fetterman took to X to denounce the unrest, posting photos of the destruction and clarifying his support for peaceful protests—not violent chaos. “I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that,” he wrote. “This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement.” Fetterman’s comments come as Democrats face internal division over how to handle backlash to President Trump’s immigration crackdown. His criticism highlights frustration with party leaders who, he argues, are prioritizing illegal immigrants over law enforcement.
Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the violence, comparing scenes in Los Angeles to a “Third World country.” Speaking on Fox News, Bondi pledged to prosecute anyone who assaults law enforcement, noting nine individuals are already facing federal charges. “If California won’t protect their law enforcement, we will,” she declared. Bondi emphasized that under federal statutes, assaulting state officers carries up to five years in prison—and the Department of Justice intends to pursue those penalties. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco also weighed in, criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom and warning that tolerating politically motivated violence undermines the rule of law. “This is what will facilitate the downfall of our civilized society,” he said.
