Queens’ Roosevelt Avenue, in Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district, has become a hotspot for illegal activity, causing growing frustration among residents. The area, known for prostitution and crime, now resembles a “Red Light District,” with sex workers openly soliciting on the sidewalks and vendors selling counterfeit electronics, food, and possibly stolen goods. Longtime locals say they feel trapped in their own neighborhood as violent gangs mark territory with graffiti and operate openly. Despite repeated pleas to Ocasio-Cortez and neighboring Rep. Grace Meng, residents say little meaningful action has been taken.
Following a recent town hall with Ocasio-Cortez, police raided several brothels, including one above a corner store near two schools, finding unsanitary, makeshift rooms. Although “Operation Restore Roosevelt,” a police crackdown involving over 200 officers, has reduced some crimes, multiple brothels remain active. NYPD officials criticized Ocasio-Cortez for not engaging with law enforcement or using her platform to aid the community. Local activist and council candidate Ramses Frias called for stricter laws and new leadership focused on neighborhood safety. Residents remain fearful, hoping for stronger cooperation between elected officials and police to restore order and improve living conditions on Roosevelt Avenue.
