Jessica Aber, 43, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her Alexandria home on Saturday morning. Authorities are investigating the cause of death, though early reports suggest a longstanding medical condition may be responsible. No foul play is suspected, according to sources familiar with the case. Aber had led major federal prosecutions, including cases involving CIA leaks and Russian national security threats. One of her most notable victories was securing a guilty plea from former CIA analyst Asif Rahman, who leaked top-secret documents about an Israeli strike on Iran, which ultimately delayed military action. She condemned the leak as a serious breach of national security and U.S. intelligence operations.
Aber also prosecuted executives from Eleview International Inc. for illegally exporting over $6 million in sensitive technology to Russia, circumventing U.S. sanctions. She brought fraud and money laundering charges against Russian nationals Sergey Ivanov and Timur Shakhmametov, allegedly behind one of the most extensive online money laundering schemes serving cybercrime groups. Additionally, Aber played a key role in the DOJ’s indictment of four Russian soldiers accused of war crimes against an American in Ukraine, marking a significant step in holding foreign military personnel accountable for crimes against U.S. citizens abroad. A Virginia native and graduate of William & Mary Law School, Aber had served as an assistant U.S. attorney since 2009 before her appointment as U.S. Attorney. Her legacy includes critical work on national security, cybercrime, and international justice.
