New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez signaled support for the “Bipartisan War Powers Resolution,” a bill introduced by Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie aimed at prohibiting U.S. involvement in a potential war between Israel and Iran. “This is not our war,” Massie stated in a post on X, emphasizing that only Congress has the constitutional authority to declare war. He called on fellow lawmakers to cosponsor the resolution, which is structured to force a vote under War Powers procedures. California Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna announced he is co-leading the resolution with Massie, declaring it a moment for Congress to stand against another potential Middle East conflict. “No war in Iran,” Khanna wrote. Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib echoed support, with AOC writing, “Signing on,” and Tlaib warning against repeating mistakes of the Iraq War: “The American people aren’t falling for it again.”
However, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York, recently endorsed by Donald Trump, opposed the resolution. “If AOC and Massie are a yes, that’s a good bet I’ll be a no,” Lawler posted, citing threats from Iran and the broader implications for global security. Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine introduced a similar resolution in the Senate, urging restraint and warning that further escalation could entangle the U.S. in another prolonged conflict. Kaine emphasized the need for congressional debate before military engagement. President Trump, returning from the G7 summit, rejected cease-fire efforts, saying he seeks a “real end” to the conflict, not just a temporary halt.
