Wartime often strengthens the political standing of incumbents, and President Donald Trump appears to be benefiting from this effect amid rising tensions with Iran. While many Americans remain wary of new foreign conflicts, a strong majority supports Trump’s hardline stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. A recent Insider Advantage poll found that 74.4% of respondents agree Trump should take “all necessary” steps to stop Iran’s military nuclear program, with only 22.9% disagreeing. Despite this, a Washington Post survey highlights the broader wariness among Americans about entering another conflict. The survey shows that 45% oppose going to war with Iran, while just 25% support it, and 30% remain undecided. However, among Trump’s core supporters, enthusiasm for military action is significantly higher. J.L. Partners data reveals that 65% of MAGA voters back U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets, compared to 19% who oppose.
Traditional Republicans show even stronger support for military strikes, with 51% in favor and 28% opposed. Overall, Republicans support action against Iran by 58% to 25%, according to the New York Post. James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, commented that the Republican base is not isolationist and views Israel’s fight against Iran as America’s fight. Trump enjoys a positive approval rating of 46% on his handling of the Iran conflict, with 40% disapproving. Although he cannot seek a third term, Trump remains focused on maintaining support for his foreign policy decisions, with 95% of his 2024 voters continuing to back him.
