CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, laughed openly while analyzing the lack of voter support for Elon Musk’s newly announced “America Party.” During a segment on CNN News Central with anchor John Berman, Enten revealed that Musk’s potential third-party base was essentially nonexistent. According to polling, only 4% of voters like Musk while disliking the Republican Party—a tiny group for launching a national political movement.
“This entire thing makes very little sense to me,” Enten said. “It makes about as much sense as selling sand in the desert.” He added that most people who admire Musk already identify with the GOP, leaving little political space for a new party to attract support. Enten concluded that, electorally speaking, there is “just no base” for Musk’s effort.
Musk announced the formation of the “America Party” over the weekend, claiming he wanted to disrupt the entrenched two-party system, which he said was “bankrupting our country with waste & graft.” The declaration marked a formal break from his previous alliance with Donald Trump and the Republican establishment.
Trump quickly fired back, calling Musk “off the rails” and warning that the America Party would only create “disruption and chaos.” He dismissed the idea of a third party as “ridiculous,” arguing that the U.S. political system was fundamentally designed for two major parties. “We’ve had tremendous success with the Republican Party,” Trump said.
The rift follows growing tensions between the two men. Musk once donated heavily to Trump’s campaign and was named the symbolic head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Their relationship soured after Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed Congress, eliminating EV tax credits and derailing a NASA nomination for Musk’s close friend, Jared Isaacman. Musk has yet to release details about the America Party’s platform or leadership.
