California Gov. Gavin Newsom is under fire after criticizing Vice President J.D. Vance’s family during their private vacation to Disneyland. Newsom, a likely 2028 Democratic presidential contender, posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) targeting Vance amid a wave of protests that greeted the vice president’s family upon arrival in California.
According to the Orange County Register, about 100 demonstrators, some waving Mexican flags, jeered at Vance’s family as they arrived. Protests continued throughout Anaheim during the family’s visit. Despite the trip being personal, several local Democratic officials encouraged public harassment. Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento stated, “I’m offended by the visit.”
Newsom amplified the sentiment, writing: “Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance. The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t,” referencing a recent immigration raid in nearby Ventura County. That operation uncovered child labor violations at a cannabis farm and detained over 300 illegal immigrants—including a convicted sex offender working alongside children.
Newsom’s comment sparked heavy criticism. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin accused him of defending violent criminals, pointing out one man had convictions for kidnapping and attempted rape. Legal analysts also blasted Newsom, alleging his administration ignored child trafficking linked to illegal labor at donor-backed facilities.
Conservative commentator Will Chamberlain quipped, “He’s not returning your underage illegal alien indentured servants to work on your donor’s pot farm.” The situation has triggered calls for investigations into Glass House Farms, where eight unaccompanied minors were reportedly working in hazardous conditions. Newsom has not responded further.
