Trump responded, “I’ve been targeted for four years… by corrupt politicians.”
The exchange occurred as Trump signed an order revoking security clearances for employees of Covington & Burling LLP, the law firm that assisted Smith’s investigations. The memo directs the federal government to review the firm’s contracts and ensure alignment with the administration’s priorities.
Trump’s move comes as part of a broader strategy to undermine his political and legal opponents, sending a message against the abuse of power by partisan actors. Smith had been appointed to investigate Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election and mishandling of classified documents.
