Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy reported Friday that the red Tesla President Donald Trump purchased from Elon Musk during a White House event in March is likely to be sold or given away. The car, which still sits in the White House driveway, has become a symbol of the increasingly strained relationship between the former allies. Once a display of cooperation between Trump and Musk, the vehicle now marks the fallout of their escalating public feud.
Doocy told Fox & Friends that the car’s future remains undecided, but sources say it may be used for a promotional giveaway or sold off. The Tesla ceremony, originally held to showcase the automaker’s achievements, occurred just as controversy erupted over Musk’s cost-cutting at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which led to public backlash, vandalized vehicles, and a significant drop in Tesla’s stock value.
Amid rumors of a potential conversation between Trump and Musk, Doocy reported that White House aides deny any such call is being planned. Trump himself dismissed the idea during a CNN interview, saying, “I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem… but I wish him well.” Despite the tension, Trump appeared more disappointed than angry, according to those close to him.
The feud worsened after Musk publicly criticized Trump’s signature tax and immigration bill, backed calls for Trump’s impeachment, and accused Trump—without providing evidence—of being named in Epstein-related files. Trump responded by labeling Musk “CRAZY” and hinting at terminating Tesla’s government contracts.
Vice President JD Vance offered support to Trump without directly addressing Musk’s attacks. In a social media post, Vance praised Trump’s leadership and slammed the media narrative, while the White House called the spat “an unfortunate episode” and reiterated Trump’s commitment to the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” Musk, meanwhile, has shown signs of softening his stance.
