A Republican congressman became the focus of national attention Wednesday after far-left protesters left a coffin on his doorstep in a threatening display. The incident, captured on video, underscores the growing dangers lawmakers face amid a year marked by political violence. Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI), chair of the House Administration Committee, was targeted when a group of elderly protesters staged a mock funeral procession up his driveway, leaving a coffin and flowers at his front door.
Steil has faced criticism from left-wing activists over budget cuts in the recently passed Big, Beautiful Bill. Among the protesters was Ellen Holly, former Walworth County Democratic Party Chairwoman, who posted a photo of the coffin on social media. A sign on the coffin read, “Here lie the hopes of the most vulnerable killed by the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ signed into law by President Donald J. Trump and endorsed by Lyin’ Bryan Steil. RIP Democracy 1776-2025.”
The protest was organized by the Southern Wisconsin Grassroots Network and the Working Families Party, who live-streamed the event titled “Death of Democracy” on Facebook. During the broadcast, a viewer requested Steil’s home address. Protesters avoided police engagement, with one saying they wouldn’t “invite the police” and planned to leave quickly after the demonstration.
After placing the coffin, protesters walked across Steil’s lawn and took photos of his home. The U.S. Capitol Police are aware but no charges have been announced.
Steil condemned the protest, calling it “disappointing” that Democrats and the radical left resort to such tactics, but vowed to continue his work undeterred.
