In 2025, Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green launched a new impeachment effort against President Donald Trump, citing inflammatory remarks the president made regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Speaking passionately from the House floor, Green declared, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States.” He condemned not only Trump’s rhetoric but also Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what he viewed as passive complicity in the face of such comments.
Green underscored the moral significance of the issue, invoking the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” He accused the president of engaging in “dastardly deeds” and pledged to introduce articles of impeachment. Green described his effort as a grassroots movement, stating that real change would only come through pressure from the public. “The people have to demand it, and when the people demand it, it will be done,” he said.
Despite his impassioned speech, Green’s impeachment drive received a lukewarm response from within his own party. House Democratic Caucus Chair Peter Aguilar downplayed the initiative, saying impeachment “is not a focus of our caucus.” This signaled a clear lack of broader support among Democratic leadership and cast doubt on the viability of Green’s effort.
Meanwhile, President Trump stirred controversy on another front, warning Iran of devastating consequences should it attempt to assassinate him. In a forceful statement, Trump said, “If they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end.” He criticized former President Biden for not issuing similarly strong warnings, attributing it to a “lack of intelligence.”
Tensions with Iran heightened further following revelations from the Department of Justice. Federal authorities confirmed they had thwarted a plot by an Iranian agent to assassinate Trump in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. According to officials, the operative had received instructions from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was living abroad. Though the suspect remains at large, the incident has added fuel to an already volatile geopolitical climate.
