Hours after President Donald Trump told Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to “go to hell” in a fiery Truth Social post, the Senate adjourned Saturday for its August recess without reaching a deal to confirm Trump’s pending nominees. Despite behind-the-scenes negotiations between Schumer, Senate GOP Leader John Thune, and White House officials, talks collapsed over Schumer’s demands for federal funding and assurances against further spending cuts.
Schumer reportedly sought to unfreeze funds for health and foreign aid programs and a promise from Trump not to pursue another round of budget cuts. Trump publicly rejected the proposal, calling it “political extortion.” In his post, Trump blasted Schumer as being under pressure from “Radical Left Lunatics” and urged Republicans not to give in, declaring, “Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
Thune attempted to pass a smaller batch of nominations by unanimous consent before adjournment but was blocked by Democrats using procedural tools to delay confirmations. Trump had pressed the Senate to stay in session to push through nominees, but ultimately only a few were confirmed.
At a press conference, Schumer maintained Democrats were negotiating in good faith, but accused Trump of refusing reasonable compromise. The failure to reach a deal comes as Democrats face declining approval ratings and fundraising challenges ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Meanwhile, Trump’s political operation has already surpassed its $1.4 billion fundraising goal for the cycle, positioning Republicans for a well-funded campaign push to maintain control of Congress during Trump’s second term.
