A freshman Democratic senator has openly acknowledged that President Donald Trump is winning key trade negotiations with several of America’s largest trading partners. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), when asked by a Fox News reporter if he believed Trump was succeeding in the ongoing trade war, responded without hesitation: “I mean, absolutely,” citing the president’s recent trade agreement with the European Union.
Fetterman also referenced liberal commentator Bill Maher, calling him “one of the oracles for my party.” He noted Maher’s admission that Trump’s tariffs, which many believed would harm the economy, had not caused the expected damage. “He thought the tariffs were going to tank the economy and he acknowledged that they didn’t,” Fetterman said.
The senator expressed optimism about Trump’s progress, saying he was pleased with the EU deal and hopeful that a final agreement with China would also be favorable. His comments come just after President Trump announced a new round of tariffs targeting nations with large trade surpluses with the U.S., including Canada.
The move is part of Trump’s broader “Liberation Day” tariff strategy, introduced earlier this year. The strategy includes reciprocal tariffs aimed at correcting trade imbalances. Although implementation was delayed to allow for negotiation, Trump’s administration has now moved forward with the plan.
China is the only exception, having agreed to negotiations after facing steep tariffs—over 100% on most exports—for two weeks. Both countries have since agreed to suspend those tariffs temporarily while discussions for a final agreement continue.
