President Donald Trump announced Friday that he had fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer, a Biden-appointed official overseeing the production of monthly jobs reports, accusing her of manipulating employment data for political purposes. Trump claimed that McEntarfer inflated job growth figures during the previous administration to benefit Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, while unfairly revising downward employment numbers from his own presidency.
“I was just informed that our Country’s ‘Jobs Numbers’ are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He pointed out that the Bureau of Labor Statistics allegedly overstated job growth in March 2024 by about 818,000 and again in August and September by 112,000 jobs, numbers he called record-breaking and suspiciously inaccurate. Trump emphasized the need for fair and accurate job data, free from political manipulation.
Trump further criticized McEntarfer for reporting only 73,000 jobs added in July—a figure that fell short of expectations—and for revising prior months’ data downward by 258,000 jobs. He also took aim at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, accusing him of manipulating interest rates to help the Biden administration.
According to the Labor Department, July’s job growth was indeed only 73,000, but Trump’s allegations have cast doubt on the reliability of these figures following his decision to remove McEntarfer from her position.
