Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman made a surprising admission about President Donald Trump during a Friday interview with Fox News, likely ruffling feathers within his own party. When asked if he thought Trump was winning the trade war, Fetterman responded, “I mean, absolutely,” referencing the president’s recent trade agreement with the European Union.
Fetterman cited HBO comedian Bill Maher, calling him “one of the oracles for my party,” and noted Maher’s acknowledgment that the tariffs did not tank the economy as some had feared. Fetterman expressed optimism about the new EU trade deal and hoped the final agreement with China would also be positive.
Meanwhile, President Trump unveiled a broad set of new tariffs targeting dozens of countries, delaying enforcement until August 7 to give officials more time to implement and negotiate. Most imports face a baseline 10% tariff, with higher rates for specific nations like Syria, Laos, Switzerland, and India.
Trump also followed through on raising tariffs on Canada to 35%, citing illicit drug flow and Canada’s recognition of Palestinian statehood as reasons. Imports covered under the USMCA agreement were exempt. Additionally, a 50% tariff was imposed on Brazilian imports.
The White House touted recent agreements with the EU, South Korea, Japan, and others, but talks with key partners Mexico and China continue. Trump extended trade negotiations with Mexico by 90 days, keeping existing tariffs while postponing planned increases, and aims to finalize a deal soon.
