Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered a grand jury to investigate an alleged criminal conspiracy linked to the origins of the “Russiagate” investigation, which targeted Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and his early presidency. The decision follows criminal referrals by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. These referrals cite newly declassified documents that suggest intelligence officials in the Obama administration may have collaborated to fabricate a Trump-Russia collusion narrative, allegedly at the direction of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
Fox News was the first to report on Bondi’s move, stating that she signed an order instructing a federal prosecutor to present the evidence to a grand jury. A source familiar with the investigation told the network that Bondi considers the evidence and referrals “very serious” and believes there is “clear cause for deep concern.” The Justice Department declined to comment publicly on the matter.
As of now, no charges or indictments have been filed. The investigation remains in its early stages. The role of the grand jury is to evaluate whether there is enough evidence to bring formal criminal charges. Because grand jury proceedings are secret under U.S. law, many specific details — including who may be called to testify — are not available to the public.
The investigation could potentially implicate several high-profile former intelligence officials. Critics have pointed to individuals such as John Brennan, James Clapper, and James Comey as having played key roles in advancing the narrative that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia — a claim that has since come under renewed scrutiny.
Public commentators, including Megyn Kelly, have gone further, directly accusing Hillary Clinton of orchestrating the conspiracy to deflect from her own controversies during the 2016 election. Kelly called the actions “blatantly corrupt” and stated that Clinton and those involved should be held accountable. She argued the narrative was intentionally fabricated to damage Trump and distract from Clinton’s email scandal.
